Cameroon remains embroiled in a complex humanitarian situation, including the Lake Chad Basin conflict in the Far North (FN) Region, ongoing conflict in the North-West and South-West Regions (NW/SW), the Central African Republic (CAR) refugee crisis in the East region, and natural disasters such as floods and disease outbreaks, especially cholera. In 2023, an estimated 4.74 million people in Cameroon are adversely affected by these combined challenges, resulting in insecurity, a lack of basic needs, and human rights violations.
UNFPA is providing life-saving services to women and girls in need of humanitarian assistance, as a result of these various humanitarian crises. These women and girls include Internally Displaced Persons as well as refugees who have fled from neighbouring countries.
Its intervention in humanitarian context covers Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) as well as GBV Prevention and Response.
A Highlights from the SRHR intervention includes UNFPA’s deployment of 16 midwives within the framework of the BHA/USAID-funded project for the provision of critical comprehensive SRH services in 8 affected districts of the Far-North region.
Concerning GBV, one of the key results include 47 surveyors and field supervisors trained on the use of data collection tools and the management of GBV data in view of their deployment in the Far North Region to map out GBV services and providers in the region.
