Our Action

UNFPA is the lead agency of the United Nations in charge of sexual and reproductive health issues. Our mission is to create a world where every pregnancy is wanted and every childbirth is safe, a world in which every young person realizes their full potential.

UNFPA supports:

  • Reproductive health care for women and young people in over 150 countries, home to over 80% of the world's population.
  • The health of pregnant women, especially the 1 million of them who suffer life-threatening complications each year.
  • Reliable access to modern contraceptives benefiting 20 million women each year.
  • Training thousands of health workers to ensure that at least 90% of births are attended by skilled attendants.
  • Prevention of gender-based violence, which affects one in three women.
  • Abandoning female genital mutilation, which harms 3 million young girls each year.
  • Prevention of teenage pregnancies, the related complications of which are the leading cause of death for young girls aged 15 to 19.
  • Efforts to end child marriage, which could affect an estimated 70 million girls over the next 5 years.
  • The distribution of safe childbirth supplies, dignity kits and other life-saving supplies for victims of conflict and natural disasters.
  • Census, data collection and analysis, which are essential for development planning.
