Jointly with UNFPA and the Ministry of Public Health, Cameroon’s Midwives Association (ASFAC) offered free sexual and reproductive health services to hundreds of women and girls nation-wide. This was part of a week-long service delivery campaign launched in the city of Bertoua, East Region, and carried out to sustain the advocacy on the role of midwives in the fight against maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity in Cameroon.

The campaign was organized in the framework of the International Day of the Midwife celebration. The services provided by ASFAC included family planning information sharing, counseling as well as administration of contraceptive methods. Another key aspect of this campaign was delivery of access to free cervical and breast cancer screening as well as prenatal and postnatal consultations.

During the official launching ceremony in Bertoua, more than 1,000 midwives from the 10 regions of Cameroon answered present on ground. The city of Yaounde also stood out as another convergent hotspots witnessing the deployment of midwives in mobile clinics,exhibition fair, debate conferences and sports walking a. 

UNFPA supports the Ministry of Public Health in improving the working conditions of midwives in the Far North, North, East Adamawa, North West and South West regions which are priority areas regarding the fight against maternal mortality.
So far, the results achieved include:
-126 maternity units equipped
-930 midwives trained in emergency obstetric and neonatal care
-40 midwives recruited and made available to health facilities in areas experiencing humanitarian crisis.
