The Position:

Under the General Supervision of the UNFPA Deputy Representative, the direct supervision of the Program Specialist in charge of Reproductive Health at UNFPA and in collaboration with the communication team of the country office. The Communication Assistant based in Yaoundé will provide support to the Project team in the conduct of Communication interventions and the visibility of related activities to the “Support to female Refugees and malnourished Children from Central African Republic, Nigeria and Cameroon “project. The Communication assistant is an enthusiastic Communications person to manage external and internal communications of the project. You will promote a positive public image and control the dissemination of information on the project’s behalf

Job Purpose:

As part of the support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to the Government of Cameroon in general and the implementation of the 7th UNFPA - Government of Cameroon Cooperation program, UNFPA has just received funding from KFW (German Development Bank) for the implementation of the Project entitled "Support to female Refugees and malnourished Children from Central African Republic, Nigeria and Cameroon". This joint project, which will be carried out in collaboration with United Nations International Children’s Educational Fund (UNICEF) aims to improve health and nutrition status of refugees, IDPs and local population particularly of malnourished young women, pregnant women and children under five, in the four most vulnerable regions of Cameroon (Far North, North, East and Adamawa).

 

The Communication Assistant will provide strategic guidance to a) develop the project’s communication strategy, implement and update the strategy as required, b) promote the project’s visibility among partners, international community, regional and local media, c) promote internal communication within the inter-agency project team in accordance with the agreed strategy. You will collaborate with the various units of country office team on all strategic information in the context of the UNFPA country program.

 

You would be responsible for:

  • Provide guidance to develop the project’s communication strategy, implement, and update the strategy as required;
  • Provide guidance to promote the project’s visibility among partners, international community, regional and local media;
  • Together with the office Communication Expert, monitor and implement the project communication plan in collaboration with the project team and sister United Nations agencies;
  • Ensure the visibility of project interventions on physical, virtual and audiovisual platforms in collaboration with the Communication Team of the Country Office (CO);
  • Collect and assist in the Coordination and the dissemination of operational information on the project to support advocacy and resource mobilization;
  • Coordinate the production of the information, education and communication (IEC) / Communication for Development (C4D) materials of the project in collaboration with the Peacebuilding Analyst.
  • Conduct regular missions to project implementation sites to help document success stories;
  • Write and disseminate News Letters, Memos, Policy Briefs and success stories demonstrating the impact of interventions on beneficiaries and communities;
  • Assist in coordinating the organization of joint visibility events / initiatives around the project in collaboration with other United Nations Agencies and donors involved.
  • Produce documentaries / photo, written and / or video reports about the project
  • Contribute to the finalization of the various synthesis reports
  • Contribute to other relevant tasks, as needed, including those related to Country Office communication, Regional Office and other entities (Inter-agency Communication Group, etc.)
  • Carry out any other duties as may be required by UNFPA leadership. 

 

Qualifications and Experience

Education: 

Completed Secondary Level Education required. First level university degree in Communication, Journalism or in any other related field is preferred.

 

Knowledge and Experience:

  • Excellent knowledge of media and media relations; 
  • Excellent written and oral communications and editing skills both in English and French;
  • A thorough understanding of the UN system in general, and most particularly of UNFPA mandate, and current development topics and political issues;
  • An ability to work well under deadline; keen understanding of the country’s culture, history and political context; familiarity with or knowledge of communication approaches in strategic planning, development, execution;
  • Experience in webpage updating and in writing newsletters;
  • Ability to produce reports and quality articles.
  • Computer literacy (use of word processing software, images and data) and use of the internet. A good knowledge of video editing software, computer graphics (etc.) would be an asset;
  • Experience in corporate communications and project management are important qualities too.

 

Languages:

Fluency in English and French is required.
