Dr. Sennen Hounton, UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa, recently met with His Majesty Abdoulaye Yerima Bakari, the Lamido of Maroua, in the presence of Cameroon’s Minister of Women's Empowerment and the Family. This landmark meeting symbolizes a commitment to improving the lives and rights of women and girls.
The Lamido, a highly respected traditional leader, is breaking new ground by championing gender equality. He has made significant strides, such as appointing four women as notables—a significant move in a traditionally male-dominated society. He also hosted a major forum with traditional leaders from Chad, Cameroon, and Niger, pledging support for UNFPA's initiatives to advance women's empowerment.
"Our traditions must evolve to reflect the needs of our time," stated the Lamido during the meeting with Dr. Hounton. "We cannot stand by while our daughters are denied education, forced into early marriage, or subjected to harmful practices. It is our duty to protect and empower them."
The Lamido’s commitment extends to establishing a health facility within his compound to promote safe deliveries with qualified midwives. This addresses key issues in sexual and reproductive health, family planning, and maternal care, challenging practices that have long hindered progress.
